| We began our careers in
academic research. Skip, a developmental biologist (Ph.D., UCLA, 1974)
and Biology Professor, and Caroline, a molecular physiologist (Ph.D.,
UNC, 1994) and Pediatrics Assistant Professor, each began exploring
how they could help resolve the science education and training challenges
they increasingly witnessed in classrooms and labs. In 1989, Skip began
his involvement with a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
to increase equity of access to quality science education for all learners
-- with the intent this commitment would be a sidebar to his research
program. Early accomplishments led to more ideas and funding and great
personal satisfaction. In 1998, after accomplishing his research goals,
Skip focused his career on science education and training. Caroline’s decision to redirect her career was rooted in her experiences teaching courses and mentoring students in the UNC Medical School. In 2001, she accepted a position to help advance Skip’s
programs in new directions and to create new areas of expertise in
science-learning.
